French E-Invoicing: What Really Changes on 1 September 2026
Every French business must be able to receive electronic invoices from 1 September 2026. The obligation to issue them reaches SMEs in 2027.

The French e-invoicing reform is often reduced to a single date, which creates a lot of confusion. There are in fact two distinct obligations, with two different timelines, and they do not affect companies in the same way. Here is what applies to you, and in which order.
Two obligations, two dates
On 1 September 2026, every business must be able to receive an electronic invoice. That deadline does not depend on your size. On the same date, large companies and mid-caps must additionally issue their invoices in electronic format. For SMEs, small businesses and micro-enterprises, the obligation to issue applies from 1 September 2027.
Receiving is the deadline that hits you first
This is the point many directors miss. Even a small company that will only have to issue in 2027 must be able to receive from 1 September 2026, because its large-account suppliers will start sending electronic invoices on that date. Not being ready on the receiving side means risking that some invoices no longer arrive in a usable flow.
The role of the platforms
Invoices between French businesses travel through a partner dematerialisation platform registered with the tax authority. You therefore have to pick one and connect it to your management software. More than 70 platforms have already been provisionally registered by the DGFiP. The choice depends as much on compatibility with your ERP or accounting software as on price.
What it demands from your management system
An electronic invoice is not a PDF sent by email: it is a structured, machine-readable format. Your tool has to produce that format, transmit it to the platform and, above all, receive and integrate supplier invoices without re-keying. Recent cloud ERPs handle this natively. Older software often needs an additional module, when an upgrade is still possible at all.
New mandatory fields on your invoices
The reform adds mandatory statements on issued invoices: from 1 September 2026 for large companies and mid-caps, from 1 September 2027 for SMEs and micro-enterprises. Check this with your accountant and configure it in your invoicing tool.
Where to start if nothing is done
Three questions are enough to frame the subject. What is my real timeline given my size? Can my current management software issue and receive a structured format, or does it need to evolve? Which platform do I choose, and who connects it? Answering these early leaves time to test under real conditions rather than discovering problems on switchover day.
