Odoo works through apps: you activate accounting, then CRM, then inventory, as your needs grow. That is its great strength, particularly for a small structure that wants to start light and scale gradually. The flip side: the more modules you stack, the more overall consistency and updates demand discipline, especially if you have customized. Business Central ships from day one with a finance, purchasing, sales, inventory and projects core in a single database. Less freedom up front, but functional consistency from the very first day. In short: Odoo is a set of building blocks, Business Central a pre-assembled core.

This is where the gap is widest, and it depends entirely on your existing setup. If your company already lives in Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Excel, Teams, SharePoint), Business Central plugs in natively: two-way entry editing from Excel, quotes sent from Outlook, data flowing into Power BI without a third-party connector. That continuity saves real time day to day, particularly for finance profiles who live in Excel. On budget, an honest comparison is more nuanced than the marketing pitch. But the real cost plays out in integration, paid modules, hosting and above all maintaining customizations over time. Business Central has a higher entry point but natively includes building blocks you would pay for elsewhere, and its Microsoft cloud model limits technical debt. Odoo is often the right choice if you are a very small or young company, with simple processes, a tight budget, no attachment to Microsoft, and a need to start quickly on a narrow scope. Business Central takes the lead as soon as you are already on Microsoft 365, your accounting and financial requirements tighten, you have multiple companies or currencies, or you want to limit the number of vendors to manage. The real trap, in both cases, is choosing the tool before framing your processes: that is what makes an ERP project fail, far more than the name of the software.
