How Much Does an IT Outage Really Cost an SMB?

    By Helion Cloud Team

Idle payroll, lost sales and delays: a simple method to calculate the real cost of downtime and prioritize continuity.

An IT outage is often valued at the technician’s invoice, yet that is usually the smallest part. When email, ERP, point of sale or files become unavailable, payroll continues while revenue, deadlines and customer trust are at risk.

    01

    A simple formula

Add the hourly cost of blocked staff, margin lost on missed sales, overtime or penalties needed to catch up, and recovery expenses. This produces an hourly downtime cost that helps decide how much prevention is economically justified.
    02

Not every application is equally critical

Classify services by maximum acceptable downtime and acceptable data loss. Thirty minutes without email is not the same as an ERP outage during closing or a point-of-sale failure on Saturday. These answers guide backup, redundancy and recovery design.
    03

    The minimum continuity plan

Know who calls whom, how to communicate when Teams and Outlook are unavailable, where backups live, who owns emergency accounts and in which order services return. Test at least one restoration and one outage scenario every year.
    04

    Invest according to risk

The goal is not to make every tool invulnerable. Compare estimated downtime cost with monitoring, backup, redundant connectivity and priority support. Start with the three processes that actually keep the business running.

    Summary

Downtime becomes manageable when it is costed per process and per hour. Helion Cloud can map critical services, test restores and build a continuity plan proportionate to your SMB.
